Youth of the Year 2013 - Hope Newman

Hope Newman, 14, Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County’s Youth of the Year, is an 8th grader at River City Middle School. At school, Hope is actively involved in Idaho Drug Free Youth, Leadership Advisory, National Junior Honor Society, and tutoring after school to help other students. She is the type of young person that teachers love to have in their classrooms.

Hope began attending the Boys & Girls Club in 2009, and believes the Club is not only a safe place to attend, but a great place to serve. In addition to attending the Club daily and being an active member of the Junior Staff program, Hope also tutors during Power Hour, and helps in the office whenever needed. Last summer, Hope took part in the teen programs at the Club that took her to Gonzaga University, North Idaho College, and the University of Idaho, giving her a chance to see the amazing opportunities that await her after high school.

Upon graduating, Hope plans to attend college, with the desire of owning her own business one day. Her plans have started off on the right foot as she recently launched her own nonprofit called Blankets of Hope. Hope’s mission is to give blankets she has handmade to those in need, and to date, Hope has given out over 130 blankets. With her family, teachers, and staff at the Club cheering her on, Hope will no doubt do great things.
